- Social Contract 2. Nationalism 3. What is the third estate? 4. Treaty of Versailles Part 11 Instructions: Answer the entire question. Do not simply list answers. Craft paragraphs. • Use specific examples from the assigned primary source readings as well as from class lectures. • You may NOT use any material from outside class (meaning random websites, Wikipedia, etc). Rely on your notes, readings, and lectures! • Your essay must have an introduction, a thesis statement, specific evidence, and a conclusion – do not just stop writing. • Congrats on reading the entire instructions, if you write the word “flower” at the top of this section, you’ll get two bonus points. 1. The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen was drafted in 1789 by members of the newly formed National Assembly in France. This document outlines a number of ideals that epitomized the first part of the French Revolution. How and why do we consider this document a product of the Enlightenment? What influences do you see from similar documents written in the eighteenth century in Europe or North America? In answering these questions, you should bring in specific examples from class lecture materials (good places to start are the first three weeks of class on the American and French revolutions) and, most importantly, both the DRMC and other primary sources like Rousseau’s “The Social Contract,” Paine’s “Common Sense,” or Sièyes’s “What is the Third Estate.” You should include a definition of the Enlightenment, as well.
