Q: The Pitch Project: what is it?
A: Making a “pitch” to solve a social issue.
Your non-fiction text raises and/or addresses problematic, critical issues that are relevant to our society today. By now you are well into your text, and will be finished 2/3 by the end of next week. You’ve had opportunities to think critically about the topics and issues presented in your text: you have been reading actively & annotating.
This project has four parts, and you will be working on it while you finish reading your nonfiction selection.
Overview of Pitch Project Parts:
A. Select a problematic social issue raised in your book, for further investigation. Find four additional, reputable research sources; create an annotated bibliography for each of these four sources.
B. Think of a solution to the problem you’ve explored. Develop a vision & plan for an initiative that would help to solve the problem.
C. Create a “pitch” (a convincing speech or presentation) to present to a National Advisory Council for your chosen area: argue why the issue needs attention, explain your initiative that will help to solve the problem, and request funding for your program.
D. Rehearse your pitch, then film it and submit it.
Pitch Project Parts: The Details
Part A:
● Issue research & annotated bibliography creation
● Due by midnight: Monday March 8
Part B:
● Create a solution
● Recommended completion: midnight on Tuesday, 9 March 2021
Think of a solution to the problem you have explored. What will help address this situation and make it better? Is there a social action, further research project, campaign need, policy change, educational opportunity, court case, law change, arts program, environmental action, investigation, advisory panel, or remediation project (etc.) that would help? What is it? How can it make things better? Develop a vision and plan for an initiative that would help to solve the problem; make it research-based, using your annotated bibliography sources. You do not need to submit anything from Part B.
Part C:
● Write your pitch
● Recommended completion: Thursday or Friday March 12, 2021
Create a pitch to be presented to the National Advisory Council for your chosen area. The aim of your pitch is to discuss why your issue deserves critical attention within society today, to present your solution idea, and to petition for funding from this body. The structure of your pitch is up to you, but it should include a clear introduction & conclusion, and have supporting points & proofs. Be sure to include the request for funding, and be clear about what it will be used for.
