Sociology in a Digital World

Social economic status is an individual or group’s position within a hierarchical social structure. SES depends on a combination of values, including occupation, education, income, wealth and place of residence. Examination of SES often reveals inequalities in access to resources, plus issues related to privilege, power and control.
When looking at digital divide and society the need to understand how social roles have been affected. Social roles until recent years were viewed as a gender concept: male, female; husband, wife; construction worker, housewife. Now there is an emerging development to look at roles from a group dynamic and also within a specific institution for portraying the lives of those who share an occupational identity. With the advent of technology we now have social roles with new names and meanings.
