An emotion based on cognition and one based on arousal.

In order to be happy, we need to focus on optimism – a general tendency to expect positive outcomes and self-efficacy- the belief in our ability to carry out actions that produce desired outcomes. We also need to focus on regulating our emotions and forming positive relationships with others. Secondary emotions are those that are based more on cognition than arousal-shame, guilt, pride, etc.

Discussion Directions:
Describe and give examples, the difference between an emotion based on cognition and one based on arousal. Next, reflect upon and describe a time when a secondary emotion had an important influence on your life. Then, review and describe the things you do or should do to keep yourself happy and healthy in order to have positive relationships.
