Iron deficiency anemia is most common nutritional disorder of infancy and childhood specifically in children between 6 months to 2 years. In the United States it is greatest among toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age. The most common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are listlessness, irritability, lack of interest in play, weakness, pale skin, the pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands and feet, inflammation or soreness of your tongue, brittle nails, unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or starch, poor appetite and decreased activity tolerance. Some diagnostic tests that can be taken include hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, ferritin levels, determination of total iron binding capacity, and thorough history and physical. Treatments include oral administration of a ferrous salt is usually sufficient or taking iron supplements with vitamin C but avoid cow’s milk. Complications include heart problems, problems during pregnancy, and growth problems.
