The following table of results MUST be included for full credit:
Station Breathing Rate (breaths per minute) Heart Rate (beats per minute) Peak Flow (as applicable)
#1 Resting
#2 Rest w/straw
#3 Warm-up Walking
#4 Jogging/ Fast Walking in THR Zone
#5 Jogging/ Fast Walking w/ Straw
#6 Jogging/ Fast Walking w/ Straw AND nose pinch
#7 Walking w/ coffee stirrer
1. Which of the stations was easiest for you (besides resting!)? At that station, what were your breathing and heart rates upon completion?
2. Which station was the most difficult for you? Why?
3. What factors do you think had an effect on your ability to continue exercise? Discuss at least 4 variables that played a role in today’s lab, focusing on variables that affect the pulmonary system primarily.
4. How did your readings for breathing rate vary between stations 4-7? If they varied, why do you think this occurred? If they stayed the same, why do you think this occurred?
5. How did your readings for heart rate vary between stations 4-7? Why do you think the readings varied? Did you leave your Target Heart Rate Zone at all? If so, why? If not, why do you think others may have seen their heart rate increase above 85%?
6. How did your readings for Peak Flow vary from rest, post-exercise, and after straw breathing? Why do you think you saw these results?
7. If you had to stop jogging, when did this occur and why did you have to stop? If you were able to jog throughout the experiment, why do you think others may have had to stop?
8. Which of the stations do you think is ‘depicting’ what an Exercise-Induced Asthma attack may feel like? During that station, was it harder to inhale, exhale, or both?
