Current Issues and Topics for Students with Disabilities

Complete a paper on a current issue and/or topic for students receiving special education services. The computer-generated copy must be double-spaced and use 12-point, Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins. The paper must include a title page and reference page, using APA formatting, no abstract page is needed. You must review a minimum of 5 sources (peer reviewed journal papers and articles from the last 10 years) Do not use resources that are not from reputable places (e.g., blogs, forums, teacher’s websites, etc.) Cite them in the body of the review using APA 7th edition formatting. The paper will be assessed based upon quality including introduction of topic statement, content, summary and implications, point of view, writing style, completeness, neatness, grammar, and organization. Completeness refers to having addressed all the information necessary for the assignment. Neatness refers to the overall look of the paper.

Step 1. Choose an issue/topic from the following list to write your paper on:
• inclusive classrooms: how do students with, without, and at-risk disabilities perform in comparison to non-inclusive ones
• standardized testing: what is the role of standardized testing in schools and does it hurt or help students with disabilities
• classroom management: what role does it play in terms of teacher success and/or student success
• effective instructional strategies: what are the most effective strategies to use for students with and at-risk for disabilities
• direct (explicit) instruction: what are the advantages versus disadvantages of using direct instruction (also known as explicit instruction) for students with and without disabilities
• family involvement: what is the impact of family involvement on the outcomes of students with and at-risk for disabilities
• ESSA: how do the changes to the education law ESSA impact the services for students with disabilities
• self-regulation: what impact does the development of self-regulatory skills have on the outcomes of students with and at-risk for disabilities
• assessments: what role do assessments play in the education of students with disabilities
• feedback: how does feedback impact student performance and what is the most effective way to provide feedback
• teacher preparation: are general education teachers prepared to include students with disabilities in the general education classroom
