Unprecedented rate of poverty reduction

China’s sustained economic growth over the last decade resulted in a historically unprecedented rate of poverty reduction. The poverty rate in China was roughly 60 percent in 1981 and has declined to about 10% in 2004. As such, about 500 million people have climbed out of poverty during this period.
