Adaptations of stories play an important role in perpetuating as well as challenging interlocking systems of oppression. This project asks you to evaluate a story, Cinderella, research its origins and cultural context; and then create your own adaptation/retelling (story with illustrations) for an audience outside of the classroom (audience: 5-year old American children) to challenge interlocking systems of oppression. In the analysis of Disney’s film, Cinderella and the original story focus on the intersection of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation. Analyze the story in which the intersections of social categories, such as race, ethnicity, social class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and age are related to difference, power, and discrimination in the United States.
