1. This week we learned that children from minority cultures and linguistic groups tend to benefit from ecological assessment systems. This assessment allows minority children to demonstrate their skills beyond the restrictions of potentially biased, formal assessment tools. How might the informal nature of this interview, with the social worker, have helped Brian to feel at ease during this process? 2. Discuss how the social worker conveyed interest in Brian’s language proficiency to Brian. Was Brian comfortable with the social worker or was he concerned about her assessment of his language skills? Provide evidence to support this observation. 3. As we discussed in the coursework, minority children and adolescents have different levels of English-language proficiency. Determining this proficiency level is often the task of the mental health professional since this information is necessary when selecting appropriate assessment tools and treatment plans. Using the guidelines from the video we watched earlier in this week’s coursework, ESL Student Interviews: Language Proficiency Level, determine Brian’s ability to communicate with the social worker from a beginner to high advanced student. Provide evidence to support this observation.
