Analyze the gender situations of the experiences, issues, and characters presented in the film. The student should reference the text material and any additional information deemed important. Personal experiences and opinions concerning the film should be limited to a paragraph at the end of the paper. The paper should NOT simply retell the story or be a film critique. The goal is to analyze and reflect upon the issues presented from a sociological approach.
Purpose: Experts agree that children see a variety of male and female characters in the media demonstrating various behaviors, beliefs, and traits. When they see this media often there are stereotyped gender roles shown over and over again. As a result, these images can affect how they think of themselves, what career choices they make, how they dress, and behave. Additionally, it can impact how they treat the opposite gender. Therefore, it is important to recognize the messages that media sends to children and why it is important to send a positive message to them.
Some but not all questions to be considered include: What are the sociological issues depicted in the film? What agents of socialization are obvious and how? Who was involved and why? What are the gender stereotypes, social status and social roles? Are there stereotypes in the film that defy the traditional gender roles? Describe the actions and behaviors in the film.
