Describe artwork from artists that depict African and non white nationalities as human beings rather than just
represented as the enslaved. Through a journey into 18th century art, explore the artworks of Augostino
Brunias, William Hogarth, Gandolfi Gaetano, and a few other artists as well as unknown artists, that illustrate
African and Afro-Caribbean people as more than enslaved individuals. A portrait of Francis Williams, the first
recorded black writer in the British Empire, is a very interesting portrait as well. It showcases a black nobleman
that can read and write in the 1700s. The more widespread notion is that Africans were lesser people and
enslaved but the lesser known fact is that there is artwork that represents the African as noble figures, gods
and kings.
