Chapter 11 – Feasibility and Project Management, Summary, 1
• The four types of feasibility assessment are technical (or engineering) feasibility, economic (or financial) feasibility, fiscal feasibility, and social, political, and environmental
feasibility.
• An alternative is technically feasible if it satisfies the required engineering criteria and can be built.
• Engineering projects incur capital costs and operation and maintenance costs.
• The value of money changes over time, so costs and benefits must be compared in constant dollars (i.e. dollars at the same year).
• To compare costs, the costs must be in the same units.
• Engineering economic factors can be determine by direct calculation, by tables, or built-in spreadsheet functions.
Chapter 11 – Feasibility and Project Management, Summary, 2
• Select the alternative that maximizes the net present benefits, not that maximizes the benefit-cost ratio.
• Fiscal feasibility addresses the question of whether you can obtains enough money to pay for the project.
• Social, political, and environmental feasibility addresses whether the project has sufficient backing of the public and political leaders and is compatible with the environment.
• Project management activities include planning, scheduling, and supervising.
Feasibility Assignment, 1
• Dominion, Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas and Southern Company Gas propose to build a natural gas pipeline (called the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP))
Pipeline started in West Virginia (Marcellus Shale reserves) and goes through Virginia and into North Carolina Approximately 600 miles long https://www.dom.com/about-us/news-center/natural-
gasprojects-and-initiatives/atlantic-coast-pipeline/maps (Accessed March 6, 2017)
• The assignment is to perform a well-documented feasibility assessment of the ACP.
Use all of Jensen’s Chapter 11 feasibility areas.
