ASSIGNMENT: CAREER COUNSELING PROJECT
Descriiption: The student will interview an individual for at least three sessions regarding his or her
career-related background, current realities, and ambitions. The student will use developmentally
appropriate career assessment tools and activities. The student will write a 7 – 9 page report, using
APA style, summarizing and analyzing your sessions and include copies of all activities/information
shared with the client.
Procedures: Each student will interview a person for a minimum of three, 30-minute sessions. The
individual should be someone who you DO NOT know well. Identify yourself as a FAU graduate
student working on a career-counseling project. Be prepared to give the individual copies of all project
outcomes. To provide confidentiality, use only the person’s first name. They should fit one of the
following categories: high school junior or senior, college student, adult man/woman, downsized
employee, or an individual making a career/life transition. You may use appropriate career-related
activities, resources, and the internet depending on your assessment of your client’s needs. The
following is a guideline of topics to cover during each of the sessions. An Example would be made
available on Canvas. This is assignment is worth 30 points.
• Session 1 – Intake – What is the client’s background, strengths, values, personality, and skills?
• Session 2 – Generate possible occupations using assessment tools. What are the major career
themes or groups evidenced by the occupations generated? Select one of the occupational
choices and assist your client in researching it, using information from The Occupational
Outlook Handbook and two additional resources of information (internet sources are
permitted).
• Session 3 – Develop with the client a concrete plan of action steps he/she can take once the
project is completed to continue his/her career development.
