Select a problem in present-day society that is causing difficulties for a group of working people. Educate yourself about the problem. Identify some step or action that would solve the problem, or at least lessen the problem. Engage in a civic manner by doing something to raise awareness of the problem and your proposed solution, or to help bring your proposed solution into being.

There are many possibilities to choose from. Here are a few. The low wages and high living costs faced by many U.S. workers have been much discussed in recent years. Workplace hazards (chemicals, unsafe working conditions, etc.) are a constant problem. The weakness of organized labor (unions) and the difficulties of union organizing are longstanding difficulties. The recent #MeToo movement has spotlighted the problem of sexual harassment at work. You are free to look outside the United States and examine a problem faced by workers in another country. The difficulties that crime, weak governments, and corruption cause for workers in Latin America are getting substantial attention these days. The challenges to workers in poor countries toiling in “sweatshops” owned by or producing for companies in rich countries received much scrutiny in earlier eras. The websites of organizations concerned with labor issues contain much information and can be an important resource for identifying problems facing particular groups of workers. Such organizations include: the AFL-CIO (for the country as a whole); the N.J. and other state branches of the AFL-CIO; the National Employment Law Project; the Cornell ILR Worker Institute; the National Immigration Law Center, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee; and the National Right to Work Committee. (Note that the latter is an employer-backed, anti-union organization). Organizations concerned with events in China include China Labor Watch and the China Labor Bulletin.
