Paper topic: Is Islam a peaceful religion?
Use the following definition for peace: 1. freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. Please write a term paper to determine if Islam is a peaceful religion with respect to the peace and war verses, sharia law, treatment of women, and terrorism. I have attached a zipped folder containing the syllabus and all the readings for the class. There is a grading rubric for the paper as well as a course outline in the syllabus. Please use the readings from week 6 for the paper. Any of the readings I attached can be used for the paper, but please make sure to use 3 to 4 “cited resources” that are not from the readings. Earlier in the semester, I wrote a 5 page paper on whether or not Islam is a peaceful religion (using peace to mean “freedom from war or violence”). I made my determination by examining if the peace verses are abrogated by the war verses and looking at two examples of war/violence (used treaty example from 6.1 article and ISIS). The only sources I used for the 5 page paper were the Quaran and the 6.1 reading. A summary of my conclusion is as follows: ” The language of the Quaran, the frequency of the Quaran painting non-Muslims as the other, and how much the Quaran talks about war prevent Islam from being a religion of peace. I conclude that the peace verses are not abrogated by the war verses, but the wording of the Quaran leaves this determination up for debate. Peace remains one of the most fundamental concepts in Islam, so rather than being considered a peaceful religion, Islam can be called ‘a religion inclined toward peace.'” NOTE: To unzip the folder I attached: (1) download the zipped folder (2) right the folder in its file location (3) click “extract all” (4) after step 3, a regular (unzipped) folder in the same location with the same name as the zipped folder should appear.
