Construction of a Deviant Category

  Official Deviant Category- Choose a deviant category that is officially recognized and labeled by a social control agency. History of the Label- Discuss the history of the formation of the deviant label. Where did the “wording” originate? Which social control agency made the law official? Who were the “moral entrepreneurs” in this issue? Why was this behavior ‘intolerable’? Take one or more perspectives from the class lectures and use them to explain how this category came to be. (2-3pgs) Effect on Society- What would be the effect on society if this deviant behavior were not legally prohibited? Would there be less or more crime? Might this behavior be good for society as a whole?
