Cultural movement

In her commencement address “A Tapestry of Hope: America’s Strength Was, Is , and Will Be Its Diversity,”
Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston argues that the United States has changed from an assimilationist to a multicultural society. She celebrates this and notes that, in fact, America has always been “a land of immigrants”
(148). What cultural movement does she say led to this change in outlook? And why does she think that in 1994, when she gave her speech, the metaphor of a tapestry better represents this nation and its people rather
than the melting pot of old? Focus on the passages where she addresses these issues. Finally, do you agree with her? Or would you suggest a different metaphor to represent Americans in 2020?
