1.) Discuss the various ways in which cultures and societies can maintain social order. What kinds of societies are more likely to have which forms of order? Are all kinds of order successful, or are some more successful than others? If you could institute one kind of social order in American society that we do not currently have, what would it be and why?
2.) Discuss the functions of rites of passage and rites of intensification. What purpose do they serve in society? Discuss at least two rites of passage from other cultures, and what purpose they serve in that society. Do you agree with them? Why or why not?
3.) What are the functions of both visual and verbal art? Include religious, social, political, cultural, etc. functions of both, with examples. What must anthropologists keep in mind when collecting and studying cultural art?
4.) Discuss the idea of a “global culture.” What is it? Why might it be possible: what mechanisms are in place that could bring it about? What issues might stand in the way of a global culture? Do you think this would be a good idea or a bad one, and why?
