Option 10: Dance as Poetry. Student of Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins’ dance style draws on Zen philosophy
and haiku poetry. Watch a few dances Hawkins choreographed, such as Plains Daybreak or Death is the
Hunter. Next, research some of the qualities of haiku. Write a 2.5 to 3.5 page essay exploring the connections
between Hawkins’ dance and haiku poetry. Do you think the connection is clear or too hidden for an average
person to see? Support your discussion with references to specific dances and specific poems. Also, use and
highlight three or more vocabulary words from the chapters on dance and/or literature.
