Data Analysis

Part I – Research
Conduct 2-3 episodes of observation/participation in your fieldsite/project. At least one of these episodes must include you participating in the activity/community/phenomenon that you are studying.
For each episode:

  1. Record fieldnotes using the format practiced in your pilot observation exercise.
o The notes you jot down while participating might be very minimal since you are to participate as fully as possible. This means that you will need to set aside time after you conduct your participation research to draft a full account of your experience (data).
    o Fieldnotes Example
    Actions
  2. Make a map of the activity, space, actors….(refer to map examples in weekly lesson). Also record the date, day of week, time of day, and other factors that you think may be relevant to understanding what is happening. Please include the maps in your submission (you may generate a digital maps or scan and upload map as an image)
  3. Generate a map key that decodes the symbols you used
  4. Wrap-up: Write a brief general description of what is going on in your project, explain how you could continue to use mapping as a means of gathering data and representing it visually, reflect on what information (data) you collected this week and how it informs your understanding (analysis) over the course of your fieldwork this week, discuss any barriers or obstacles you encountered and how you might address them going forward.
    Part II –
    • Participation/observation notes (2-3 sets)
    • Map/s (you may generate digital maps or scan/photogragh and upload maps as images)
    • Wrap-Ups
