1) write the title of your paper on top of the paper.
2) a clear thesis statement (you can even type it in bold) that lucidly shows what you argue; NOT WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO ARGUE. Don’t write “In this paper I shall show how I think religion is not a private sphere of activity”; rather “This paper argues that religion is not a private sphere of activity because of….” Then a following sentence should elaborate the main argument. Remember your introductory paragraph should not be devoted to give random information, but give a focused account of what the paper is about. Be precise and use words economically so you can best express your views.
3) your research should be very focused and specific. Don’t write on broad topics like “why people are religious”. More importantly provide your DEFINITION of religion and methodology in the paper based on what we have studied in class so far. Make reference to text. If you have your own definition, that’s fine too; but please explain it in paper. Don’t get side-tracking by explaining too much, but make sure you at least let your reader (me!) know how you’re understanding religion, ideally backing it with a reference.
4) you need to have at least 5 sources for this final research paper. Have a citation page and have a style of citation (MLA, etc.)
5) Make sure your are showing your research, either fieldwork or secondary sources from the library (or both). Show that you have analytically studied your findings that are meant to support your main argument.
