Depriving someone of their liberty

    Should profit be a consideration when it comes to depriving someone of their liberty? How can we morally justify the for-profit probation companies that exist in states such as Georgia, Florida and Alabama? If we are truly creatures with complete freewill, how do you ethically justify incarceration and other punishments for criminal offenders? Conversely, if our behavior is, in fact, largely influenced by our surroundings from birth onward, how do you ethically justify incarceration and other punishments for criminal offenders? How would having either a 'freewill' or 'something less than freewill' viewpoint on human behavior influence one's views on rehabilitation? Most research tells us that solitary confinement for long periods literally causes inmates to 'lose their minds.' This being the case, discuss whether or not solitary confinement can be ethically justified for inmates that are not a physical threat to others.
