Step 1: Select Documentary/Topic: Pick a documentary film that evaluatesa social issue. You will study the documentary and how it frames and explainsthe issue and what positionon the social issuethe documentary proposes for the viewer. You will then research thesocialissue and look for supporting, complicating or opposing evidence. Your paper’s thesis will evaluate, based on your research and study of the data you find, the quality and validity of the argumentspresented in the movie. You may notchoose one of the documentaries we have studied in class.You must use at least 8outside scholarly sources to evaluate your film: use the library’s online database to search for articles on your documentary’s topic to evaluate the quality of the film’s claims.For example, let’s say you choose Terms and Conditions May Apply todo study ofcorporate and government data collection practices. You would analyze the claims presented in the filmand do researchon datacollection practices/protectionsto see if yourfindings support, complicate or subvert the issue as framed in the movie.
