As you watch your film (and before writing), think about these questions:
1) What are the cinematographic qualities and/or innovations that makes this film a “masterpieces?”
2) In what ways does the film-maker express the elements and qualities of “Film Auteur?”
3) In what ways does the film express “critical thinking” on the part of the film-maker?
4) How do critical thinking skills, on the part of the viewer, lead to a deeper appreciation of the film?
For this essay:
1) Discuss how the film reflects the historical and socioeconomic contexts of America ca. 1936 or Europe
ca.1927, and how the film-maker responds to the problems and issues of the day in the film. What are the
intentions and cinematographic techniques used by the film-maker to express his attitude toward Politics
and/or industrial capitalist society and/or the machine, and their effects on humanity in his day?
2) In what ways does the film-maker express the elements of “critical thinking” and the qualities of “Film
Auteur” through the film?
3) Identify and explain how the film expresses at least two elements found in one of the following, either with
reference to the film-maker himself or to one of the characters in the film:
a) the “Hero’s journey,” or
b) the “Creative Cycle of the Aesthetic Person.”
