Select a film or television episode that you think makes good use of sound. Write a paper detailing how sound
is used, and consider the following questions in your writing:
What role does production sound play in the soundtrack? How does the dialogue fit into the mix, and of what
quality is it? Do you suspect there are any moments where ADR may have been used based on the sound of
the dialogue or the context of the scene?
How do elements of hard effects, backgrounds, and Foley fit into the soundtrack? Are there specific moments
where sound effects help support the narrative or make significant contributions to the overall experience?
What role does music play in the soundtrack? What elements of needle-drop music and/or musical underscore
are used and how do they affect the viewing experience?
How does sound contribute to the overall storytelling process? What connections can be made between the
visual elements and the soundtrack? Are there parts of the story where the writing made a good opportunity for
sound design?
