Google has announced that they will be ending their support for third-party cookies at some point in
time. However, their first proposal for doing this (called FLoC), has now been replaced by a new
proposal for a system called Topics. What does Topics do differently than third-party cookies, and
would you expect different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS, Android, etc.) to support it? As
we have discussed in class, the use of third-party cookies is still very pervasive, but it is assumed
within the advertising industry that they will be put aside at some point. Given this, what other
options and techniques are being discussed to replace them, and which one do you think will be successful? Do you expect these new approaches to significantly improve privacy protections?
How does this all relate to the CCPA, CCPR and the GDPR?
