Myth: Schools are the great equalizing mechanism because everyone in the United States has a chance
for a good public education.
Sociological Perspective: Schools reproduce inequality. One reason is that public schools are funded
through local property taxes, thus schools in high-income areas receive better funding per pupil than those
in low-income and poor neighborhoods (Downey and Gibbs 2010).
