Imagine you are a third grade teacher. You are expected by your district to practice for standardized
assessments (STAAR in Texas). These assessments are created through standard-based reform and have
monoglossic expectations. How would you develop a heteroglossic space for your students? How would you
encourage translanguaging while also meeting district standards? Why do you think this is important for
emergent bilingual students?
