- Philippe Ariès (GHC Ch. 1) made the first significant argument about the history of childhood and the change in childhood over time. What did Ariès argue? Define his argument using one or two quotes from his writing. Looking at our class discussions and class readings about premodern world (pre-1600 CE) childhoods, however, what evidence have other historians produced to argue that Ariès is wrong? What evidence have they produced in support of his claims?
- The nineteenth to twenty-first centuries produced a tremendous amount of change for children in the world. What do you think was the most significant change for western children in this time period? What other transformations for western children did that single premiere change lead to? How did that particular change impact (or stand in stark contrast with) the childhoods of children in the non-western world? Keeping this in mind, do you think that these changes ultimately led to positive or negative consequences for children in the world as a whole?
