Human factors engineering

  • An incident that can be explained from human factors engineering perspective.
  • brief outlines an historical incident. critically examine this and provide a human factors report as to the causes
of the incident & suggestions for addressing this happening again.
    Question:
On January 15 2009 an Airbus A320-214 suffered a dual engine failure and the pilot flying decided to perform a
controlled ditch into the Hudson River. Following investigation the incident surrounding US Airways Flight 1549
has been termed ‘the miracle on the Hudson’, with the pilot being praised as making rapid critical decisions that
    ultimately saved all onboard.
An outline of the incident can be found here:

There is also a very useful short video that simulates the flight and overlays radio transmissions. More
interestingly it also displays the related transcript of the cockpit voice recorder.

From what we have discussed in terms of Classical and Naturalistic Decision Making, what are the differences
between the two theories and how do they apply to the sort of decisions that were made on the flight deck of
Flight 1549? It is important to ensure you discuss the critical factors that you believe had a bearing on this
incident in terms of the relevant literature we have covered during this module.
