Create an Informatics poster presentation
There have been many changes in the computerized nursing documentation system you use on your nursing unit. As a result, your unit has had to attend some mandatory education classes to receive training about the changes. The nurse manager of the unit is receiving a lot of negative feedback regarding the amount of training from the nursing staff. However, they are not documenting in the new areas correctly and some are choosing not to even try to chart in those sections because of personal reasons. This class has made you aware that this behavior negatively affects the data documented in the medical records, which affects patient outcomes on your unit. This is why outcomes on your unit (and within your organization) are significantly below national standards in several areas. The nurse manager knows that the staff provides exceptional care to patients on your unit, but this is not reflected in the electronic record.
Your nurse manager asks you (a student enrolled in a nursing informatics course) to create and present some information that that can help educate the staff on the importance of utilizing nursing informatics in promoting positive patient outcomes. She believes that the education received by a nurse working on her RN to BSN might be able to influence the nurses to use the nursing documentation system correctly.
The nurse manager asks that you address the following areas in your project:
Define nursing informatics and describe the importance in a staff nurse role.
Discuss standards/regulations that impact nursing informatics that the nurses should be aware of.
Describe nurses’ role in using informatics and how documentation in the EHR is important to patient outcomes. Explain the problem the nurse manager is experiencing and the outcome you hope to achieve.
Explain how financial reimbursement is impacted by proper nursing documentation or inability to document appropriately.
Explain how nursing documentation affects patient outcomes.
What recommendations can you give to the nurses to improve their compliance with the required documentation? Please be specific and evidence-based.
