Reading and Discussing the book Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key (Jack Gantos)
The purpose of this assignment has two folds: (1) learning from individuals in special education and (2) having
the opportunity to speculate on the book yourself.
Joey Pigza is quite the handful. No matter how hard he tries, he simply cannot seem to stay out of trouble.
From swallowing his house key to injuring a classmate, Joey creates many problems for his teachers and
family, who are at their wits’ end. Written from Joey’s point of view, this book offers readers a glimpse of what it
is like to have ADHD. In a 2-page paper, describe (1) how the book has extended your understanding of
students who display ADHD symptoms and (2) at least 3 effective strategies that you would use with students
exhibiting such issues.
