    Drawing from key pastoral elements and literary devices used in the text, make an argument about how women are depicted in the text you have chosen. Are they victimized or condemned? Are they symbols for the natural world or are they depicted more realistically? Do they have their own personalities and wills or are they stripped of power and voice? How are they portrayed that way – through the use of what literary devices or pastoral conventions? Make sure your essay relates the pastoral elements of the text to how women are being represented.
