Operations to shape seek to maintain the status quo between major global players by continuing to mold relations
and environments that are beneficial to the United States’ interests. According to the Department of the Army (20
operations to shape have four purposes: “Promoting and protecting U.S. national interests and influence, building
partner capacity and partnerships, recognizing and countering [adversaries] … and setting conditions to win future
conflicts”. The means to these purposes are often focused on understanding and leveraging human perceptions
through regional alliances and improving partner nation abilities to secure themselves (Hunter, 2019). This global
positioning of military influence encourages adversaries to remain in competition while not escalating to conflict o
If conflict occurs, the shaping of the strategic environment will have postured U.S. and ally forces to outmatch the
enemy and return to diplomacy (Department of the Army, 2017).
The Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) component of the Army Health System shapes the global environment by b
and maintaining a high level of proficiency in their craft. Training of the unit mission essential task list and conduct
clinical rotations to maintain medical skills are examples of how these capabilities are honed (Department of the A
2019). This expertise is an unseen force multiplier in battle by allowing ground forces of large-scale combat opera
to have confidence throughout their missions. MEDEVAC companies also shape the global confidence of partner
nations. Training to build partner capacity can support security operations and form increased cooperation betwee
U.S. and its allies (p. 2-15). Medical Evacuation doctrine (Department of the Army, 2019) also sites humanitarian
assistance missions as an opportunity for MEDEVAC units to perform its mission while strengthening partnerships
I have experienced building partner nation capacity through training in my MEDEVAC company. My unit trains wit
Royal Netherlands Air Force to provide aerial platforms for their medical personnel. This relationship and sharing
resources and knowledge builds a lasting trust between the nations. Friendships developed through training can a
for healthy exchange of ideas and bring new perspective on global state of affairs. Shaping of this training helps s
the solidarity of U.S. and European alliances.
