CLO 1 Evaluate and select processes, tools, equipment and machines for manufacturing of
engineering components.
CLO2 Analyze advantages and limitations of various processes and its effects on materials
structure and performance.
CL03 Apply manufacturing techniques considering various constraints such as costs, safety,
environment and society.
Task
As the production manager of an Industrial Pipes Manufacturing Company you need to select a
casting process to fabricate an order for seamless pipes for an oil and gas company from the USA.
Your selection needs to be justified by considering the specifications of the pipes (give below),
manufacturing process requirements, health and safety considerations, costs and profit factors,
safety of your workers and environment concerns.
The specifications of the pipes and its manufacturing process requirements are as follows
a) Pipes: To be made from steel with a significant amount of Pb content
b) Number of pipes: 1000 pipes each weighing at least 250 kg
c) Mechanical properties: Pipes must be seamless to be strong enough to contain flow of
pressurized fluid.
d) Dimensional tolerance and surface finish of inside and outside surfaces are not critical
e) Health and safety: Manufacturing process must comply with international guidelines
such as from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA, etc
f) Risk associated with the process selected must be managed using precautionary
measures and these should be discussed in the essay.
