Motivational Strategies To Engage Adult Learners

You are a faculty member teaching an online social work course. You have a student who consistently submits work late, rarely participates fully in the discussion boards (e.g., doesn’t reply to enough classmates or doesn’t make substantial posts), and generally does not seem to be engaged with the class. Additionally, the student never incorporates any of the feedback you’ve provided into his or her future work, as you find yourself repeatedly giving the student the same feedback on each assignment.

What strategies would you use to motivate the student, and why do you think they will be effective? Would your strategies change if the course was face-to-face? If so, how?
