Write an essay tackling the “language” portion of
studying music by answering some of the following questions:
- What is the importance of measuring intervals in the development of Western music?
- What role did the institution of the church play throughout the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance in the development of music; - What are some problems in the performance of Medieval secular music?
- What kind of new alternatives were developed during the Renaissance in regards to
the complexity of music, particularly in the different textured being developed; - Describe some of the developments of music history between the Renaissance
period and twentieth-century music including, but not limited to, secular songs, opera,
orchestra music, avant-garde, and jazz.
