National opinion of the federal government

Is the topic of slavery evident in the letters and journals of the soldiers, both Confederate and Union, and does this support or contradict the author's perspective? If the war was caused by slavery, was the idea of emancipation commonly supported by Union soldiers in 1861? What do these letters reflect about national opinion of the federal government?
