For an organization to succeed, it has to have a mission and vision in place. It has to create values. An organization’s mission, vision, and values set the tone of the organization’s culture and climate. This discussion post will cover my organization’s mission, vision, and values, and also the culture and climate. It will also discuss the role of the nurse leader.
Organizational Mission, Vision, and Values
I work at Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH). Its mission is to provide high quality, cost-effective health care that delivers the best value to the people they serve in a spiritual environment of caring in association with internationally recognized teaching and research (Houston Methodist Hospital [HMH], n.d). HMH has set ICARE values: integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence (HMH, n.d).
Organization Culture and Climate
Marquis and Huston (2012) defines culture as the total of an organization’s values, language, traditions, customs, and the few things present in an institution that are not open to discussions or change. An organization’s climate is how the employees perceive an organization (Marquis & Huston, 2012). The culture of Houston Methodist Hospital is evident in its value statement. HMH’s ICARE values are evident in the care it provides. This is evident in the results of the patient satisfaction surveys that are conducted after the patient has been discharged.
According to the employees, the climate at HMH is warm and welcoming. It is a great organization to work for. Management is always so supportive and takes our opinions and requests into consideration. A nurse leader should develop, with staff input, a multi-phased plan with the idea of what the organization wants to accomplish in terms of workplace culture and inter-professional communication (Boynton, 2012). Team work is promoted in my unit. The unit manager is always available to help. She gets involved with direct patient care and supports the staff in providing safe, effective care to patients.
Role of the Nurse Leader
The role of the nurse leader is to uphold the organization’s mission, vision, and values. The nurse leader promotes these values amongst staff. The nurse leader is expected to be a resource person and support for staff on the unit. One of the major issue staff usually have with any facility is the management, therefore, it is the role of the nurse leader to promote a warm and welcoming climate and culture and develop ways in which it can be improved or changed. According to Boynton (2012), a leadership strategy to promote individual and organizational behavioral change is to develop a plan with vision, commitment, and consensus-building.
Conclusion
To succeed, it is imperative that an organization sets a mission, vision, and values because they help set the tone of the organization’s culture and climate. It also helps set expectations and directs the role of the nurse leader.
