Panopticism

  1. Read “Panopticism” from Michel Foucault’s revolutionary 1975 book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the
Prison. (This.is a dense text, so you might consider printing it out and underlining key passages to have with
    you in class.)
Choose one sentence from the text that interests you and explain in a short paragraph what you think it means.
Then come up with an example of a time when merely being in an architectural or outdoor space made you
feel that some power was being exerted upon you. Find a picture of the space to show in class, if possible.
  2. Read the posted excerpt from Albert Woodfox’s Solitary, a personal account of spending 43 years in solitary
confinement as one of the Angola 3, after which his conviction was overturned and he was freed, in 2016. Then
explain in one paragraph what you think Woodfox means when he claims that he developed “a moral compass
that was unbreakable” while in solitary. What “code of conduct” did he follow? Does it make sense to you?
