Overview
Persuasive essays come in different flavors that are related to one another but are not interchangeable. Earlier
this semester you worked on an abbreviated form of argument when you completed the film review by justifying
your evaluation of a movie. For that essay you needed to examine common standards for elements in film–
such as superlative casting choices, appropriate film techniques, and an engaging theme, among several other
options–and to argue that your film was good (or not) based on such criteria as you mustered.
For the present essay, you will go further than that: you will define key terms and argue a position on a topic related to vice or virtue. Your essay may incorporate sources from previous essays written for ENG 101 this
term but must otherwise be original to this semester’s ENG 101 class rather than some rehashing of a paper
you wrote for some other class.
Students will
organize their essays around their main points (ideas) rather than the sources;
develop their arguments using common sense, required sources, and reasonable assumptions;
focus readers on the relevant points and issues using sophisticated and clear transitions without going off on
tangents or drawing attention to themselves, their readers, or the writing task;
adhere to MLA conventions and use suitably college-level language through 1,500 to 1,800 original words (plus
the heading, title, sources (as quotation–paraphrase and summary are counted as original words), and Works
Cited page);
proofread to eliminate errors and weaknesses, especially those that have been highlighted through this point in
the term; all the while avoiding “no-win arguments” such as the tired old pro vs. con chestnuts (abortion,
drinking age, euthanasia, gun control, legalizing illegal drugs, and so forth). If you are not likely to be swayed
by an opponent’s five- to six-page paper, then you should not attempt such a topic yourself.
Please follow the attached essay that was written and please try to match it to the best of your ability and I will
attach the following sources that I have used Oxford English Dictionary, ESV Study Bible ESV Bibles by
