This paper is a primary source paper. It is based on the digital archive Valley of the Shadow. It is in Chicago
Style. The thesis should be clear and different sections of the paper should reflect the instruction below
focus on two themes: women, and African Americans. So state at the outset of your paper in very clear
terms what your objective is. That is, you plan to draw upon primary sources including newspaper reports,
letters, diaries, census, etc., lodged in the digital archive Valley of the Shadow in order to compare and
contrast the representations and experiences of two groups of people in two counties on opposite sides of
the slavery question during the era of the Civil War. That these two groups include women and African
Americans.
2) Then choose your evidence. For the section on women, you can take much of the material from your
older paper, and add some more from the digital archive.
For African Americans, go through Valley of the Shadow and collect all the information that relates in some
way to issues of race and organize them into themes, for instance: experiences of slaves; newspaper
representations of African Americans, attitudes of the two counties toward emancipation, etc.
3) Organize the material in such a way that you can make an argument in your conclusion about the
similarities and differences between the 2 counties (Franklin in a free state and Augusta in a slave state).
For instance, did women in the 2 sections have different attitudes toward slavery, Lincoln, the war, their
roles in the war? DId newspapers in the two sections produce similar or different images of slavery and
Black people?
