Professional Reflection & Family Engagement

Phase IV: Professional Reflection & Family Engagement(ALSDE Indicators 2.3, 4.4)In the final phase, phase IV, you are asked to complete a professional reflection and to design a collaborative event where students are able to share and celebrate their published pieces of writing. The first requirement, a personal reflection, should include your reflection on designing a writing workshop unit of study. Please consider and include each of the following components while writing your unit reflection:

1.Reflect on the writing workshop unit of study you designed. (Mines was revolved around the Unit of Study A: The Kinds of Things Writers Make and How We’ll Make Them ) (1st grade). How does your unit demonstrate a research-based instructional practice for English Language Arts?

2.Describe the specific professional resources you used while designing your unit. To what degree did each of the professional resources you used play a part in your development of the writing workshop unit of study?

3.Professional teachers actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally. Explain how you stretched yourself by seeking out additional professional resources, colleagues, and/or writing experts to design your writing workshop unit of study.

The second requirement of phase IV is a culminating writing workshop event. The culminating event is an opportunity to establish and maintain a positive collaborative relationship with families, school colleagues, and agencies in the larger community to promote the intellectual, social, emotional, literacy development, and well-being of children. The details of the culminating event are up to you, but you must ensure families, school colleagues, and a community agency join together to celebrate and honor the authors in the early childhood/elementary classroom.
Phase IV is designed for you to convey your knowledge and understanding of the critical nature of professional growth, reflection, and evaluation, in combination with the value of building a collaborative relationship with families, colleagues, and community agencies. Your professional reflection illustrates your awareness of the vital role of self-reflection to strengthen your professional practices. The culminating writing event you design shows your understanding of the equally vital role of collaboration with families, colleagues, and community agencies. Both self-reflection and collaborative relationships are trademarks of professional educators.
