Description
“Ideas, cultures, and histories cannot seriously be understood or studied without their force, or more precisely their configurations of power, also being studied” (Said 12).
Using one or more of the concepts of post-colonial analysis that we covered in class (including those in the What The Theory? video series), analyze at least two of the course readings as texts written in a context of colonialism/post-colonialism. Considering that all of these writings are considered foundational texts of American literature, what do they tell us about the tensions, complications, themes, and/or problems underlying American identity?
Concepts in Post-Colonial Theory:
Cultural imperialism/cultural colonization
Othering
Colonized consciousness
Subaltern
Mimicry
Unhomeliness
Psychological resistance
Colonialist oppression
Orient/occident or west/non-west
Only use the page numbers of the text, that I have indicated in the file name. Example: Letter of Columbus on the fourth voyage, only use the texts from pages 415-418.
