Race on screen

Dealing with the race issue can produce and perpetuate the racialized hierarchy, but might also problematize these racial categories and challenge the hierarchy. Select two films representing these two directions. (The first film I chose for you is The world of Suzie Wong, the other film is The Crazy Rich Asians) One film reinscribes the racial power hierarchy: the other (possibly but not necessarily made by an ethnic or non-Euro-American filmmaker) explicitly addresses this problem and strives to deconstruct conservative racial discourses in mainstream cinema. Explain in detail how the deconstructive film critiques, undermines the mainstream racial discourses and offers new and empowering perspectives for understanding differences and alliances amongst human groups.
