Recent nursing practice literature
The surrogate role is not one that is frequently mentioned in recent nursing practice literature. Is that role as defined by Peplau relevant to nursing practice as currently experienced? If so, in what way? If not, why?
Sample Solution
The surrogate role as defined by Peplau is an important part of the nurse’s professional practice. The definition provided by Peplau describes a nurse acting as a “facilitator or teacher” and serving in a supportive role to help patients explore their feelings, gain insight into their problems, and reach decisions that are beneficial to them. This definition of the surrogate role still holds relevance today and is important for nurses to understand and utilize in order to provide quality care for their patients. In modern nursing practice, there is an increased emphasis on patient-centered care with the goal being patient empowerment and autonomy. Nurses play an essential role in this model of care by providing emotional support, guidance, education about available options, and helping patients set achievable goals for themselves. All these tasks fall under the umbrella of what Peplau described as the surrogate role; it involves offering support while also encouraging independence from the patient's perspective. In this way, nurses can serve more effectively as advocates for their patients' well-being while also respecting their autonomy and decision making process.
Patient-centered care has become increasingly popular due to its focus on evidence based practice which allows clinicians to analyze data collected during assessments or treatments to inform individualized plans best suited for each patient’s needs or preferences (Berry et al., 2016). In such cases where evidence driven strategies are used combined with traditional nursing roles such as advocacy/surrogacy (as described by Peplau), nurses can offer comprehensive services that may be tailored specifically per individual client rather than having one size fits all solutions (Walsh & Skelton 2018). This approach enables nurses not only provide physical health related interventions but also offer psychosocial support when needed resulting in better outcomes overall within healthcare population groups at large (Berry et al., 2016).
Therefore it is clear that although modern healthcare models have shifted away from traditionally paternalistic approaches towards more autonomous ones as mentioned above; roles first outlined by Hildegard E Peplau such surrogacy remain relevant today because they form part of larger framework which allows for improved communication between healthcare providers which leads to enhanced quality of life outcomes among individuals receiving care (Walsh & Skelton 2018). As stated previously it is important however that these roles do not interfere with clients' right choice nor impede upon their autonomy but instead strive empower them through teaching self-care skills so they may make healthful decisions thus allowing them take ownership over own lives again(Bermann& Synder 2017) .
