1.This rendition of Swing Low Chariot is a great representation of the fusion between traditional gospel/spiritual music and other forms of more upbeat contemporary music. Following the abolishment of slavery in the United States, African Americans began to create their own music genres as a result of their new found freedom of expression and this performance is a clear example of that. I enjoyed this upbeat gospel rendition of Swing Low Chariot because it exemplifies the musical talent of all the performers and their ability to turn a traditionally somber spiritual song into a hit that the whole audience could enjoy. I found it interesting that it seemed like most of the audience was white and it made me realize the history of black objectification and exploitation as a form of entertainment for white consumption.
2.Before today I had never hear this song before. I think that this song does fit the blues because there is a just the one female artist. This would suggest that it is classic blues but it seems to be a solo act which would then suggest that it may be delta blues. Personally I wouldn’t categorize it under classic blues but more into delta blues because it is a solo act and because of the main instrumentation is just a guitar. A classic blues song would have instrumentation similar to jazz. I’m not to sure what the lyrics mean so i can’t really speak about them. The spotlight could be used to express her emotion as an individual and one way that it could change the meaning of the music is that is can serve to portray the person in the spotlight’s true facial emotion of what she is expressing.
