Responding to a Murdered Loved One

Suppose someone you love very dearly (you choose--your husband , your boyfriend , your child or best friend) has been murdered. The police investigate, but they do sloppy work and let the case go. What would you do? How would you react, especially if you are convinced you have found the murderer?
