Structure of a Critical Book Review Critical reviews are typically comprised of the following: • Header—Include the book title and author as , as well as your name and the date of your submission.
• Introduction—The length of an introduction is usually 1-3 paragraphs. Include a few opening sentences that briefly describe the content and topics of the book, then present the aim or goals of your review, with a hint to your general assessment.
• Summary—Present a summary of the key arguments made in the book, along with a limited number of examples and some meaningful details. If you quote from the book, put the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For example, Foster was embittered by “the absurdity that he was doing surgery for the United States Army and couldn’t operate in his own home town” (p. 45).
• Critique—The critique should offer a critical, analytical, and balanced evaluation of the strengths, weakness, and notable features of concepts and arguments in the text that you choose to focus your paper on. Remember to base your evaluation on specific criteria derived from course content and your experiences. What is the state of the world/topic /science at this moment and where are we going? Where do we need to be going? Are we on track, Good reviews should also include other sources to support your evaluation (remember to cite and reference).
